The House Oversight and Reform Committee has initiated a new Democrat-led push to obtain Donald Trump’s financial records from the accounting firm Mazars USA, specifically focusing on the President’s effort to purchase the NFL team from Buffalo, the Bills.
That particular focus indicates that the Committee and its chair Elijah Cummings are performing followup investigation into the testimony provided to them last month by Trump’s former “fixer,” personal attorney Michael Cohen. In his statements before the panel, Cohen indicated that Trump had “inflated” his estimated wealth as he applied for the loans required to purchase the team, a felony offense.
The release of the information about the Democrats’ request by two of Trump’s biggest supporters in the House — Tea Party Republicans Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan — appears to have been both an effort to challenge Cummings’ authority to request records from when Trump was a private citizen and also to publicly alert the President to what Democrats are seeking so that he may make provisions to defend against their insight.
Previous efforts to let the President in on Democrats’ intentions were less conspicuous — à la Devin Nunes — but most who tried it were excoriated even by their own party for making Republicans look like foolish lackeys to Trump.
The end result is the same, however. If Trump knows what Democrats are after and who they’re asking for it from, he can presumably apply the same intimidation tactics he attempted before Cohen himself testified in the first place.
For his part, Chairman Cummings saw the humor in the two Trump adherents’ protests:
They complain about everything I do.”
That’s actually an understatement — Republicans in Congress have called on Democrats to completely end all of their investigations into the President, an understandable sentiment from members of his own party. But with nearly a dozen investigations into Trump’s affairs happening outside of Congress and apart from the recently-concluded Mueller investigation, even if the Democrats did stop their own inquiries, the probes would continue.
