Kellyanne Conway Goes After Ocasio-Cortez, Calls Her A Liar, Congresswoman Perfectly Shuts Her Down

Don't come for AOC unless you're prepared.

During a harrowing visit to the detention facilities that many Americans are now referring to as “concentration camps” by a group of Congress members, firebrand Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a series of sad and furious updates on the situation that it seems far too few Americans are aware of at the border.

The problem is, I have to put “concentration camps” in quotation marks because this is the news. But if more Americans actually knew what was happening at the border, they would be as outraged as I am — even as Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is. They would call them the same thing because there’s no denying that this is what they are.

I have been reading AP reports of children having even their meager sleeping mats taken away as punishment for losing the lice comb they were forced to share after an outbreak in one crowded cell, forced to sleep — or try, at least — on the cold concrete floor. I have read of 12-year-old boys waking up in tears with hunger at 4 AM, terrified to ask for more food, and of border guards making fun of their tears. I have read of 5-year-old children begging for cough medicine.

So when Rep. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about the cruelty of the guards who told a thirsty woman to drink from a toilet, I knew what she was saying was both true and caused a fire in her heart. I am not ashamed to say I’m crying as I write this now, and enraged that it hasn’t stopped, that it doesn’t stop, won’t stop until we stop it.

The tweet that struck me the most, though, was not about the specifics of the torture those children are enduring, but about how blatantly the agents in charge seemed not to care who saw their cruelty:

That lines up perfectly with the account of the lawyers who sued their way into the facilities, who told the AP that agents knew the date they’d be there weeks in advance. Border guards were totally comfortable with anyone and everyone seeing just how inhuman they’ve become with the children and families in their charge.

The administration, however, is used to lying. And Trump’s chief liar — after the departure of Sarah Sanders — is already in high gear, attempting to call Rep. Ocasio-Cortez a liar. Kellyanne Conway told Fox and Friends this morning,

Chuck Schumer wants to talk about photo-ops? I saw one yesterday. And it’s called Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez going down to one of these facilities and making this outrageous claim that a woman’s drinking from a toilet, which everybody who has control over that facility, or control for the border patrol has said that’s not true, they’ve not heard of this.”

Of course, Rep. Judy Chu got the same account about drinking from toilets — from a separate source than AOC. But all of my empathy, aside from being with the families detained at the border, is with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, who must have exercised every ounce of self-control she’s ever been able to muster to keep from finding Kellyanne Conway and tearing her limb from limb.

Instead, AOC tweeted. Let’s hope Kellyanne reads it and feels at least a tiny sliver of shame:
