If you’ve seen the video floating around social media of Senator Lindsey Graham — then only a junior House Representative — advocating for the impeachment of Bill Clinton by saying he didn’t even need to have committed a crime in order for Republicans to impeach him, you know that Senator Graham is a totally different person than Representative Graham.
Whether it’s because Trump himself has some kind of dirt on him or because he’s embroiled in Russian intrigue deeper than most other Republicans who have been caught up in it, Graham has proven that his ethics went out the window at some point around halfway through Trump’s presidency so far.
Not at any point until now has it seemed quite so obvious, however, as when Graham went on Fox News Sunday morning and gave the most dubious legal advice imaginable to Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr. Graham essentially told the younger Trump to ignore a subpoena — issued by a fellow Republican Senator — for him to appear and give testimony in the Russia investigation in the Senate:
If I were Donald Trump Jr.’s lawyer, I would tell him, you don’t need to go back into this environment anymore. You’ve been there for hours and hours and hours, and nothing being alleged here changes the outcome of the Mueller investigation. I would call it a day.”
Graham may not be Junior’s lawyer, but he is a lawyer, so to see him advising the President’s son to invite charges of obstruction of justice and skip out on a subpoena (as many Trump cohorts have thus far elected to do) is nothing short of scandalous.
At this point, Republicans are knee-deep in the biggest double down on a mistake since the stragglers on Richard Nixon’s team began to understand the reality around them. If only the current crop of Republicans could see the water rising around them the way Nixon’s advisors finally did.
