If you can, reach way back in your memories a thousand years, all the way back to 2016. At least, it kinda feels like 2016 was a thousand years ago. Anyway, all the way back to when Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn was the national security advisor for the Trump Campaign.
But this is a tiny window in Trump History, so let’s get specific: The brief period of time right after Trump fired Chris Christie as the head of his transition team and replaced him with Mike Pence, but right before the incoming administration fired Flynn ostensibly for lying to Pence about meetings he’d had with various world leaders, but hadn’t disclosed to the hierarchy.
So who was the hierarchy at that time? Well, it would have been Trump of course, Kellyanne, who was the campaign manager at that time for all intents and purposes, Mike Pence, who was leader of the transition, and then… Well, nobody. Those are the people Flynn would have answered to right then, and Trump and Pence pretty much made a huge deal about firing Flynn for betraying that small circle of trust.
In fact, maybe Pence was the most insistent of all. But can you blame him? The lies that Team Trump said that Flynn told Pence were the same as the ones he got arrested by the FBI for: Lying about meetings with high-ranking foreign officials, circumventing the Obama administration (who was actually still in office until January, despite the election) to illegally lobby for policy changes on behalf of the United States — all kinds of just plain traitorous stuff. If Pence had known about ANY of that and just pretended he was firing Flynn for “not having told him the truth” about it all, he would be at LEAST complicit in Flynn’s lie, and at worst, guilty of telling the same lies to the feds, if only by omission.
Enter Flynn’s son:
There are a few problems with this, beginning with the fact that Flynn Junior clearly doesn’t understand the Logan Act, the law that his father was clearly in violation of when he skirted the Obama administration to negotiate with Sergey Kislyak on policy before Trump was actually the President. So the logic of the tweet doesn’t really hold up, because it wasn’t “something legal.”
Oh, and Flynn Jr. has since deleted his entire Twitter account.
But the content of the tweet is a different matter. If, as Junior here says, his dad did not lie to Pence, then Pence is lying about (a) not having known about the meetings and phone calls between Flynn and foreign officials, and (b) lying about why Flynn was fired. That’s actually WORSE than just being complicit in Flynn’s lies or even lying through omission — it’s obstruction of justice.
If Michael Flynn Jr. is correct about this, then Mike Pence is absolutely next after the unredacted Mueller report takes down Trump.
