“She matters because the president says she matters. Who in their right mind would cross her knowing that?”
That’s the terrifying quote from a former Trump administration official remarking on the apparent meteoric rise of Ivanka Trump, the First Daughter that the President has seemingly determined is destined for greatness in the US government.
From sending her out front in diplomatic talks to charging her with leading the American delegation at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, Trump is attempting to blaze a path for Ivanka that no other parents in the nation would have either the access or the chutzpah to do. But some are wondering how far Trump will push it.
How about letting her talk nukes with the dictator of North Korea? According to reporting from the Daily Beast, Trump was accompanied into the Korean Demilitarized Zone — a place no American President has gone before — by both his daughter and her husband, who has also been viewed as having an inordinately large role in the administration for a 30-something real estate developer.
From the Beast:
It wasn’t until later that reporters learned Ivanka and Kushner did more than accompany the president into the Freedom House. They were reportedly present at a closed-door meeting between the two leaders, who ended up speaking about one of the most sensitive topics on the planet—North Korea’s nuclear-weapons program.”
Now, Take Your Daughter To Work Day is one thing. Nobody is complaining about that. But this is like not paying for daycare and then letting your 5-year-old present numbers at your board meeting that he came up with on his plastic Little Tikes Shop ‘n Learn cash register.
Some officials in D.C. were blindsided by this, but we’re not sure why, honestly. It’s not like they haven’t been doing this since day one. And it’s not just Ivanka: In the release of former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s testimony, he revealed that Jared had essentially been calling State Department-level meetings with world leaders behind his back — he even accidentally bumped into Jared and Mexico’s Foreign Minister one night in a restaurant near the capitol and had to basically ask the official to give him a call next time he was coming to town.
So should we be worried about all of this? Well, I hate to say it, but yes. Trump seems to believe he can just play this entire presidency like a storyline in professional wrestling, where nothing actually has anything to do with skill, and you can just plug whoever you want into any role and tell the actors how it should all turn out.
