Perhaps it’s our own bad habit in the media to constantly be checking and re-checking footage of Donald Trump at various events and speeches for signs of what may actually be wrong with him in a broad sense. His behavior is so erratic that it’s hard to believe he’s not under the influence of either a debilitating brain deterioration or some kind of foreign substance.
We’ve written about both of those possibilities before here at Political State, but now it looks like there may be video footage backing up the theory that Trump is actually a long-term drug abuser whose vice comes in a pill bottle — something like Adderall, as a former writer for one of his shows alleged he used.
One of the fastest ways to tell an addict apart from someone who’s just jittery or acting strangely for some other reason is to look for an addict’s “tells” — the things they do that indicate they’re thinking about using. Some get excitable near their dealer’s house, some lose focus if a certain song comes on that frequently plays when they get high or a person they regularly use with shows up.
Almost all addicts, however, regularly check their “stash” to make sure it’s safe and sound right where they left it, whether that’s in a pocket or a waistband or the console of their car. They make sure that the baggie is still tied in a knot so nothing spills out. They ensure that the gear they use to snort, smoke, or inject it hasn’t broken due to some awkward movement they didn’t intend to make. They check that the lid is screwed on tight.
That appears to be what Trump is doing in this video from just two weeks ago when the President welcomed NASCAR racer Joey Logano to the White House for an awards ceremony. Watch Trump’s right hand flit to his pocket first to pat the outside, to feel the reassuring shape of the bottle in the recesses of his jacket, then dart down into the pocket to retrieve his treasure, check the screw top for tightness without even glancing down — like a man who’s done it a thousand times:
Trump then returns it to his pocket. We can’t see what it was except that it had a screw lid he was checking the tightness of — because he returns it to his jacket so quickly that it’s clear it’s not something he needs right that moment, but that he’s obviously concerned that it’s still in place. And according to the internet, people are mostly sure it’s exactly what we keep hearing about.
Ladies and gentlemen, our President the speed addict.
