During Donald Trump’s tour of the border, during which he was excited to show off “his” “new” “border wall” — those all get separate quotation marks, since it was planned under Obama, is a replacement section, and isn’t actually a wall — the President engaged in movie script mode, as he has a tendency to do whenever he gets anywhere near the southern border with Mexico.
But instead of regaling the crowd with stories of women bound and gagged in the backs of trucks, or prayer rugs left at waysides on the journey north, Trump was channeling a different type of movie on Friday — a tough guy film, where the lead is full of pithy phrases aimed at his foes.
Trump had what he called a new statement, a new message for the immigrants that he and his administration have breathlessly told us constitute an “invasion” and a “crisis at the border.” And it was as “tough guy” as you might expect:
This is our new statement: The system is full. We can’t take you anymore. Whether it’s asylum, whether it’s… anything you want — it’s illegal immigration — can’t take you anymore. We can’t take you. Our country is full. Our area is full. The sector is full. Can’t take you anymore, I’m sorry. Can’t happen. So turn around. That’s the way it is.”
That’s not just patently false — we could fit the entire population of the United States comfortably into just the state of Texas, with enough room for everyone to have more than a football field’s worth of space — it’s also just plain racist. America was built by immigrants, to accomodate immigrants. The fact that Trump doesn’t like the brown ones doesn’t change the nature of our country’s history.
But aside from that, that’s not how the law works. Asylum seekers are legally allowed to come here, no matter what Trump wants, no matter what policy he announces, no matter what. He can’t change it without changing the very Constitution.
