Despite attempts from various Republicans – Donald Trump finally signed the bipartisan 19.1 billion disaster relief package that passed the House on Monday. And after taking 6 months of blocking funding for the bill because he wanted to include funding for his border wall and reducing funding for Puerto Rico – el Presidente decided to take credit for all the funding he rejected for Puerto Rico the past 6 months:
“Just signed Disaster Aid Bill to help Americans who have been hit by recent catastrophic storms. So important for our GREAT American farmers and ranchers. Help for GA, FL, IA, NE, NC, and CA. Puerto Rico should love President Trump. Without me, they would have been shut out!”

Seeing himself lagging in polls in nearly all of these states – Trump agreed to sign the legislation — directed at providing funding to restoration efforts in areas impacted wildfires, hurricanes, and flooding despite having demanded that Congress include $4.5 billion for more border funding. Because when Trump said Mexico was going to pay for the wall – he meant you dummy. Instead of pissing off voters in all of these states – he chose the path of least resistance for once.
Democrats pushed for and received $900 million for Puerto Rico despite Trump’s opposition which he now takes credit for of course. Puerto Rico will receive an additional $600 million for food stamps and an extra $300 million for Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Trump had long been against the disaster bill unless it included $4.5 billion for his border wall and the disaster recovery bill had stalled in Congress until Republicans in the Senate negotiated with Trump getting him to sign the bill.
Twitter called him out for being a huge hypocrite and liar:
Nearly 3,000 American citizens died in Puerto Rico due in part to your botched response.
The people of Puerto Rico owe you nothing. https://t.co/D1JVcFGCPS

Regarding Puerto Rico: the reason the bill was held up for most of six months was because Trump opposed aid for the island being included https://t.co/MUTHJ8RCDY

Trump repeatedly demanded Puerto Rico get less aid, stalling negotiations for months. https://t.co/i3wcRSNKrh

Christ, man, can’t you do *anything* without including an “I just want to be loved” subtext and at least one – but often more than one – outright lie?! Puerto Rico would not have been shut out of anything, disaster-aid-wise. Reminder: THEY’RE AN AMERICAN TERRITORY!!! https://t.co/KCTFiJftTW

Trump says Puerto Rico “should love” him for signing a Disaster Aid Bill.
A study funded by the Puerto Rican govt determined roughly 3,000 people died from Hurricane Maria. The deaths were, in part, linked to the govt’s unpreparedness. Trump rejected that number/death toll. https://t.co/J3V0ZaPXYY
