In what should be a stunning moment of clarity for not just the people of America, but for Democratic leaders who could use it to bolster their argument that Trump should be removed from office, the President unleashed an angry tirade on Thursday morning from the White House lawn that proved he actually has no idea how the impeachment process even works — something most of us learned in 8th-grade social studies.
After ranting about the Mueller probe and calling members of the special counsel team “some of the worst human beings on earth,” Trump was asked by an unseen reporter whether or not he believes that he will be impeached.
His answer, unscripted and off the cuff, says more about his political ignorance than I think anything he’s ever said before:
Trump reveals he has absolutely no clue how impeachment works, says, “I can’t imagine the courts allowing it.” (The courts have nothing to do with impeachment, which is the domain of Congress.) pic.twitter.com/EUCI688QD7

I don’t see how they can, because they’re possibly allowed, although I can’t imagine the courts allowing it. I’ve never gone into it, I never thought it would be possible to be using that word. To me, it’s a dirty word, the word ‘impeach.’ It’s a dirty, filthy, disgusting word, and it had nothing to do with me. So, I don’t think so because there was no crime. You know, it’s ‘high crimes and,’ not ‘with’ or ‘or,’ it’s ‘high crimes and misdemeanors.’ There was no high crime and there was no misdemeanor. So how do you impeach based on that?”
It’s troubling enough that Trump believes courts would be involved in the decision as to whether he could or should be impeached — only the House of Representatives makes that decision. And it’s unclear why he is emphasizing the “and” here — does he believe he’d have to commit murder with a side of jaywalking to be impeached?
But the fact that he doesn’t understand that it is also the House that determines what constitutes “high crimes and misdemeanors” in the context of impeachment is almost worse. It truly indicates that he is ignorant of even the most basic principles of our constitutional republic.
