Trump Sent Out Monday Morning Tweet About Rabbi Who Was Shot, Then Boasted About The NRA

This is disgusting.

Monday morning, Donald Trump was hard at work on his social media postings, after a long weekend of, uh, posting on social media. I suppose he had a little rally in Wisconsin as well, but it’s hard to imagine that’s a whole lot of work, other than the standing up for so long. Those rallies are where he’s really in his element, surrounded by other sociopaths like him, where he can let loose and say the most awful, heinous things he can think of.

So yeah, I guess kind of like his Twitter.

Over the weekend, a shooting at a California synagogue brought back horrible memories and made new ones as American Jews wondered once again how we’ve gotten to the point in this country where anti-Semitism and violence have resurfaced to the point that they must now fear going to worship with their congregations. This morning, Trump answered both halves of that question.

We’ve reached the point with the anti-Semitism because Trump’s white nationalist agenda — including against minorities other than Jews — stokes the kind of racial animosity that accompanies attacks like this, and has been cited by either the perpetrators of the horrific hate crimes we’ve seen on the rise in the last three years or by the people they said inspired them.

Many have attributed their motivations to Trump by name.

But the violence itself comes from rhetoric long on the rise from those on the right primarily concerned with guns and gun ownership. Ever since the NRA figured out that they could increase their income by going from a gun safety organization to a seller of guns on behalf of manufacturers, their mantra has been some variation on the theme that the “left” wants to take their guns away and that they must stop the left from doing so by any means necessary.

That’s how Donald Trump, the leader of the free world, pivots so effortlessly from a tweet ostensibly trying to comfort the victims of the San Diego synagogue shooting, albeit in his own awkward and deeply uncomfortable way…

…to tweeting about how great the NRA is — the enablers of the shooting — just 90 minutes later:

It’s hard to stomach that we are a nation led by a violent opportunist, but at least he is now the devil we know.
