Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, sat down for an interview with Axios on HBO to discuss his “work” within the administration when the host brilliantly dropped a bombshell on him and straight up asked him if Trump is a racist. Kushner did his very best to deflect from the question, but was able to muster up one statement.
“You cannot not be racist for 69 years, subsequently run for president and become a racist.”
Kushner then tried to flip things on its head and pretend that he and Donald Trump are the protectors of those who are victims of racism: “When lots of these Democrats call the president a racist, I think that they’re doing a disservice to people who suffer due to real racism in this country.”
Then reporter Jonathan Swan raised the subject of birtherism — the fictitious, racist conspiracy notion that Barack Obama was born in Kenya, that Trump encouraged for decades, even into his presidency.
“Was birtherism racist?” Swan requested. Visibly uncomfortable, Kushner reacted, “Um, look, I wasn’t actually involved in this.” “I understand you weren’t,” Swan said — and repeated the question. “Like I said, I wasn’t involved in that,” Kushner repeated.
Whoops. That was embarrassing. The interview pressed on with Kushner trying again to distance himself from Trump’s birtherism and refusing to answer the issue of whether birtherism was more racist. Swan then posed a related question: “Was Trump’s campaign pledge to ban Muslims from entering the United States religiously bigoted?” Kushner again wouldn’t say. Kushner’s non-answer: “I think he is here now and I think he’s doing a great deal of good things for your nation. And that’s what I am proud of.”
Yup — not racist. Just doing great things including banning Muslims, separating families at the border where little kids from Guatemala are dying while in federal care living in cages and saying Nazis are “fine people.” Totally not racist.
He asks Jared Kushner if Trump is a racist and Kushner quickly says no.
But then the reporter simply asks him if birtherism was racist and Kushner all of a sudden forgot how to talk.
Then he got asked about the Muslim van. Jared went limp.
